According to authorities, a woman, Martha Jessenia Gutierrez-Serrano, aged 28, was apprehended along with her mother, Marta Elizeth Serrano-Alvarado, aged 46, after allegedly assuming the identity of a 17-year-old student at a high school in Louisiana.
They were taken into custody on Tuesday morning and charged with the offense of “injuring public records,” as stated by the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office in a press release.
The St. Charles Parish Public Schools had alerted the sheriff’s office on May 29 regarding a potential case of an adult individual attending Hahnville High School in Boutte during the 2022-23 academic year.
The school had received a tip that a female student, listed as 17 in school records, was “in fact an adult possibly in her mid 20’s,” the release said. After an internal investigation, school officials notified the sheriff’s office about the findings.
Officials stated that during the investigation, it was discovered that Serrano-Alvarado had illicitly enrolled her 28-year-old daughter in the school by using counterfeit identification documents, including a forged passport and birth certificate. The motive behind enrolling Gutierrez-Serrano and the duration of her attendance at the school remain uncertain.
