Onyinye Omenugha, a 24-year-old student at the Nigerian Law School, has been honored with the esteemed Princess Diana Award, which is presented annually to exceptional young individuals worldwide.

Established in 1999 under the chairmanship of former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, the award pays tribute to Princess Diana, known for her advocacy for marginalized communities.
It celebrates individuals aged between nine and 25 who have achieved remarkable accomplishments that positively impact humanity, following in the footsteps of Princess Diana’s legacy.
For her exceptional efforts in creating positive change, Onyinye Omenugha was presented with the prestigious Princess Diana Award on Friday.
This esteemed recognition was bestowed upon her in honor of Lawsanaid, a non-governmental organization (NGO) that she established with the purpose of supporting law students with disabilities in their pursuit of inclusive and excellent education.
The Diana Award Charity, which counts former British Prime Minister David Cameron and ex-Scottish First Minister Jack McConnel as patrons, commended Onyinye’s remarkable work and acknowledged her dedication through this well-deserved accolade.
Motivated by a personal encounter within her family, Onyinye took the initiative to establish Lawsanaid. This organization’s mission aligns with the endeavors of previous recipients of the Diana Award who have demonstrated their capacity to inspire and mobilize younger generations in serving their communities and effecting enduring transformations worldwide.
Tessy Ojo, the chief executive of the Diana Award Charity, acknowledged that Onyinye’s endeavors have not only served as a source of inspiration for others but have also positioned her as a role model for young individuals within the legal sector.
In her words:
“Onyinye’s work has inspired others, and she has become a role model for young people in the legal industry.
“She is also involved in mentoring, creativity promotion, and advocating youth-led initiatives”.
Professor Cornelius Ukwueze of Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka taught Onyinye in her undergraduate programme, and exclaims: “Having taught her in the Law Faculty a few years ago, I am not surprised at this international recognition. She will go places”.
Onyinye, a native of Nnobi, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State, comes from a family with accomplished professionals. She is the youngest child of Dr. Mike Omenugha, a medical practitioner, and Dr. Kate Azuka Omenugha, who holds the distinction of being Nigeria’s second female mass communication full professor.
Dr. Kate Azuka Omenugha served as the Anambra State Commissioner for Education for a commendable eight-year tenure starting from 2014.
While Onyinye is yet to be officially called to the Nigerian Bar, she has already achieved notable certifications. She is a certified arbitrator with the Chartered Institute of Arbitration (UK) and holds membership in the Institute of Chartered Mediation and Conciliation.
In her pursuit of knowledge and professional development, Onyinye has participated in various courses and conferences organized by esteemed institutions such as the United Nations, the European Union, and Harvard University.
“She is steeped in the family tradition of excellence”, says Willie Nwokoye, an investment banker and economist who was ex-Governor Willie Obiano’s principal secretary.
“Her mother brought many awards to Anambra State when she was the Commissioner for Education”.
The Diana Award to Onyinye is “a testament to her passion and commitment”, according to Dr Emeka Obegolu, an Abuja-based Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).
To a newly elected member of the Anambra State House of Assembly, The Hon Henry Nigeria Mbachu, who represents the Awka South 1 Constituency, the honour is “the shape of things to come. “I have known her for several years, and she will achieve more.”
