Mercy Noviyon has celebrated becoming the first person to bag a College Degree in her lineage against all odds.
Mercy who studied at Yoruba Language and Communication Arts at Lagos State University (LASU), alleged that no one in her history has every gone to a tertiary institution.
Sharing her story with ALLSCHOOL, Mercy said she never knew some good could come out of her Nazareth.
“I never knew that something good can come out of my Nazareth. I am the first person to go to school in my family, i can’t even say my family may be i should use the word generation or lineage, even the villages that surrounded my village, as an indegene.
“I have never heard it in history that anyone have been to a college or polytechnic or any higher institution before let alone University, it has been giving me concern when ever people say to me that “you people don’t go to school” and i always pray that this curse should break during my time,” Mercy told ALLSCHOOL.
Mercy disclosed that her father didn’t value education, making her University journey extremely difficult.
To help herself, she had to teach in the secondary school she attended. While she was paid N7,000 (appr $10) as salary, each month she had to give N5k to the person that helped pay for her admission.
According to her, at a point in her second year, things were so tough for her that almost dropped out of school.
In her words: “It was never easy for me because my dad have too did not value education, he never wanted help.
I have to start teaching after my secondary school, I was collecting 7k as salary and returning 5k to the person who borrowed me money to run my admission every month.
“Sometimes I will lock myself up and cry till i slept off, everything has be so tough to the extent that I wanted to withdraw during my second year.”
However, against all odds, Mercy graduated with a second class upper (2:1) and is waiting to be mobilized for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
“Thank God for my people who stood by me and have been supportive with the little they have. I had 3.53 as my CGPA and I am waiting for my NYSC mobilization soon,” Mercy revealed.
Mercy is very happy to have conquered all, especially been “able to break longtime generational curse.”
The hardworking lady who never gives up on her dreams said she hopes one day people will be able to point at her and say She really made it.
