THE COMPANY WE KEEP
(INSERT 5)

“Can you just leave me at the corner of this road please?” I asked with my face down. It seemed like Mutale was the look you in the eyes kind of guy and that made me uneasy. “Sure. When are you visiting my Church again?” he asked as he drove to the side of the road. I wasn’t going to answer him because the brother was now too concerned and I didn’t like that. I got my juice bottle and got out of the car. “Tell Norah I will call her later in the day. Thanks for the ride.”
Monica never came home when mum was around so I had to wait for her at the road side. I stood there hoping mum wasn’t going out any time soon because she never liked the idea of me standing by the road. It was now getting warm that was the good part, still I kept stretching my legs in hopes of keeping warm. Flashy cars passed by but I couldn’t see Monica’s car until a public bus stopped. “Hello sister muleya?” the conductor asked. Behind him was Monica looking as if she got into a fight with Ester Phiri.
“Sister mwalaba ka bag”, the conductor said as he got the bag from inside and gave her. I had seen Monica through a lot of hangovers but not once had I seen her in such a condition. Walking to where she stood I got the bag from her and hugged her, many questions crossed my mind but not one sentence could be constructed.
In a low voice, she wept as she hugged me back, “I don’t know what to do, I’m a mess.” she repeatedly spoke as she tried to control herself from sobbing. “It’s okay don’t worry mama, all will be okay.” I said. I knew mum didn’t like Monica but as things were, I was the only person she could turn to for help. “Let’s go home. I’m sure mum will know what to do.” I said. I knew I had to convince her to go with me and boy was I prepared for that. “I can’t go to your house; you know your mum doesn’t like me. I don’t want to put you in trouble, Jane.” she said as she tried to pull herself together.
Back and forth our small argument went until I got tired of trying to persuade her, so I got my phone and called mum. “Morning mum, I’m at the bus stop. I really need your help come now!”, before she could say anything I hang up because Monica was trying to get the phone from me. “I know you think am a bad person…” before she could finish her sentence mum’s voice echoed from a distance “Jane!”, she came running towards us. I never thought I sounded like I was in danger when I called her but thank God she came as fast as her two legs could allow. When Jane saw her she turned around and wanted to leave, “You are not going anywhere.” I said as I took hold of her hand.
“What are you girls doing here? let’s go inside!” those were the words that came from her mouth. Just that was enough to stop Monica from running. We both followed mum behind as she led the way. “Why isn’t she shouting at you?” Monica whispered to me. She had stopped weeping, mum’s presence fixed something in her head but I knew she was still hurting. On the other hand, mum was busy talking to herself, she usually did that when she was mad about something. I knew it was just a matter of time and the bomb was going to explode.
“Jane close the door. Monica straight to the shower please.” mum said. She always had a commanding tone when in hyper-drive, this meant that you can’t question anything you just have to do as you’re told. My poor eyes were now itchy but I couldn’t go to bed because mum had told me to wait in the living room for her. “Did you even go to church or you were out partying?” mum asked as she took a sit. “I went! Monica called me that she wanted to see me and was on her way. When I saw how she was looking I thought I should call you because you would know what to do.” I said. Acting bravely when talking to mum had its own advantages. It didn’t mean you are telling the truth neither did it mean you are making up a story.
She gazed straight into my eyes for a second then said, “so has she told you what happened?”. I shook my head while looking at the clock on the wall. “Mum is it okay if you can let us sleep for a while before you lecture us?” I smiled warmly with a pale face. My eye lids couldn’t keep up any more. “You can go to bed. I’ll direct Monica to your room once she’s done.” Mum added as she laughed at me. Maybe it’s just because am sleepy, I thought to myself as I walked to my room. Did mum just laugh at me? What happened to her temper? I questioned myself. The bliss that came to over me as my bed came into view, “finally!” I breathed out and threw myself on the bed.
“Jane! Wake up!” a voice called out. I tossed and turned in every direction to get the voice out of my head. However, my fight was in vain. “What’s the problem now?!” I said as I opened my eyes. It was Monica. “It’s time to wake up its almost 2pm now.” she said. I got my phone to check the time and gosh, she was telling the truth. “How could you let me sleep up to this time, what a friend.” I repeatedly shouted these words as I followed her to the kitchen.
“You look good, have you seen mum?” I said warmly. It was hard for me to keep my cool but seeing Monica in a long dress wasn’t a usual thing and I will admit, never did I imagine that she would look this good in one. “Your mum said I can have it, what do you think?” she smiled as she turned around. I tried to speak but couldn’t and out of the blue I spoke in tongues which brought a bit of silence in the Kitchen. Was I that excited? I thought to myself. Avoiding questions was like a hobby for me, like being asked questions about things like tongues because guys from my class would make fun of me if they ever found out. “I didn’t know you can speak in tongues.” Monica said fluently in a British accent. I opened the pot trying to check if mum had cooked something. “It’s okay Jane. It’s not like am going to make fun of you or anything” she added. I took a deep breath, “yes I do. When did you start using a British accent by the way?”
