UNIZIK VC reduces school fee as students suspend protest

Students of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Anambra State, have suspended the 5-day-old protest they called over an increase in their school fees by the University management.

The students suspended the protest shortly after a 7-hour closed-door meeting between the University management and the representatives of the Students Unions, held at the School Council Chambers, on Thursday night.

Nigerian Tribune had earlier reported that the students of the institution, on Monday, protested and barricaded a portion of the Enugu-Onitsha highway over an alleged hike in school fees by the university authority.

The students alleged that the university management was in connivance with some Student Union Government (SUG) officials to inflict suffering on them.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Charles Esimone, who addressed journalists, shortly after the meeting, said for the sake of already existing peace between the School management and the students, the university under his leadership, had agreed to reduce the school fees, as demanded by the students.

According to the VC who was represented at the meeting by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Professor Joseph Ikechukwu, “I am standing on the authority of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, to announce to you media here present that the management of this great University that happens to be the best University at the moment in Nigeria, that the Management, haven considered the economic plight and the level of peaceful co-existence between the School Authority and Students have deducted the school fees to the best of the students”.

While thanking the students for conducting themselves in a well-behaved manner during the protest, equally warned them not to use the opportunity to misbehave.

On his part, the Unizik President of Student Union Government (SUG), Comrade Chukwuemaka Anih, while appreciating the VC and the entire management of the University for accepting their demands, promised to reach out to all the students for freedom jubilation.

Comrade Anih, who was also represented by his deputy, Comrade Chisom Augusta Okoha, noted that the agreement reached during the meeting was for the betterment of both parties.
She urged other Universities in the country to emulate Unizik, for quality education.

“We are now happy, the protest is over,” Chisom smiled.

A copy of the agreement was also made available to Nigeria Tribune, during the meeting.
